Our History

Metro Health is a 501 (c)(3) Non-Profit organization that strives to build healthier communities, one person at a time. We accomplish this by providing high-quality, compassionate health services with a commitment to ease of access, improved health outcomes, and responsive and respectful provider partnerships. Metro Health is a multidisciplinary and integrated community health center located in the heart of our nation’s capital and is dedicated to serving hard-to-reach communities, including vulnerable populations and historically marginalized populations. Metro Health was established in 1990 as a nonprofit providing supplements and other related HIV support services before mainstream HIV medicine was available, in response to the ravaging impact that the HIV/AIDS epidemic was having on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBTQ) community. Metro Health offers primary care and preventive services include physical exams, medical care, chronic disease management, prescription assistance, outreach, and insurance enrollment assistance, case management, psychosocial supportive service, treatment adherence, food-bank services, and patient navigation services.  Laboratory services are provided onsite as well.  Additionally, we offer referral services for diagnostic services and specialty care as needed, outside the four walls of the health center. Medical services are integrated with behavioral health (including counseling, psychiatry, and substance abuse). Metro Health also participates in the 340 B Program for all clients. In 2017, we became recognized as a patient-centered medical home through the National Council for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and achieved Level 3 recognition.  Metro Health received its Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike status designation in August of 2020.
